5 Beard Myths Debunked

Beards don’t seem all that complicated. You grow it, you wash it, you brush and style it and every once in a while, you get it trimmed to stay neat and tidy. Not much to it, right? Well, you’d be surprised to know that there is a wide world of beard information out there, and that means, sadly, there is also a lot of misinformation. Like any other topic, myths spring up around beards as a result of either misleading headlines, debunked science or stretched truths for the sake of profit. Today, we’re going to look at some of the weirdest myths involving beards.

That beards contain fecal matter is one of many beard myths

(1) Beards contain fecal matter.

Yeah, you read right, Kingsman. Somewhere along the way, some of us started believing that our beards are full of poop. The origins of this myth came from both a misleading headline and misinterpreted data. You see, it all started when a scientist found bacteria in beards. Specifically, enteric bacteria. Despite the fact that this family of bacteria includes many harmless species that are found all over the place, the find was interpreted as intestinal bacteria. Let me be clear: no poop was found, rather, some bacteria that are commonplace outside of the digestive system as well as in the digestive system was found in beards. The very same bacteria can be found in your mouth, on your skin, on many different plants that we eat.

You’ll be relieved to know that, when studied closer, beards were found to be quite clean. Some suggest a beardsman’s face is even cleaner than a shaved face as bacteria can be introduced by the shaving process.

Patchy beards being a completely lost cause is a beard myth

(2) You can’t do anything about a patchy beard.

While it’s true that the general shape of your beard is genetic, there is also a good chance that some of your hair follicles grow at a slower rate than others do. You could also have individual hairs that are obstructed by dead skin and product buildup around the base. Time and a great beard care routine may be all your beard needs to grow into its full, bushy potential.

At Kingsmen Premium, we recommend using beard care products with ingredients that moisturize and help promote growth, like jojoba oil and shea butter. You also want to make sure that you’re washing your beard with shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for the health of your beard. Get into a regular beard care routine that focuses on hydration and regular cleaning and with our body wash for men, you’ll get your beard looking fuller in no time!

Beards making you look unkempt is one of many beard myths

(3) Beards make you look unkempt.

This is more of an outdated way of looking at things than it is a myth, but either way, it’s entirely untrue. The only reason why a beard would make a fella look unkempt is that the beardsman in question doesn’t really have much of a beard care routine. Even then, you can still look great with a beard. If you want to keep a well-groomed appearance while sporting a magnificent mane, it’s easy! Especially with Kingsmen Premium's beard care product line. Get yourself into a beard card routine that includes washing, conditioning, moisturizing, brushing and styling. You can find everything you need to do so right here at Kingsmen Premium.

Shaving your beard to make it come in thicker is a beard myth

(4) Shaving your beard makes it grow in thicker.

It does seem that way sometimes, doesn’t it? What you’re experiencing though, is an illusion. When you shave your facial hair, the cut hairs will have a blunt end, which can change the look and feel of your beard during those first few days of regrowth. All of these blunt ends together can make it appear as though your beard is much thicker and has also become darker. This illusion will fade as it grows and the hair ends become less blunt.

It's a myth that beards have to be hot and uncomfortable in the summertime

(5) Beards are hot and uncomfortable in high heat.

Like wrapping a scarf around your face on a hot summer afternoon, having a thick, long beard feels like a bad idea. In fact, many men complain that full beards in the summer are too hot to manage. This, however, is just not true. For several reasons. The first is that your whiskers help block out UV rays so you’re less likely to get sunburned on the bearded area of your face. Your facial hair also provides shade for your skin, keeping it cooler than the skin that’s fully exposed. Finally, if you’re out at the lake or taking a dip in a pool, your beard will carry around a bit of moisture afterwards, keeping you cool long after you got out of the water.

These are five of the most prominent beard myths out there, debunked. We hope this helps all you Kingsmen out there develop a great beard care routine and love your beard.
